Crail GalleryCrail Gallery, established in 2001, shows the work of the Sim family, Susie, David and our daughter, Rachel Sim. The three of us are all graduates of Edinburgh College of Art where we specialised in illustration, animation and printmaking. David and Rachel both followed this with a post graduate MA at the Royal College of Art in London. Printmaking forms the basis for much of our artworks. We specialise in hand-made, limited edition, linocut and silkscreen printing. Often using a mixture of different methods, we also produce unique, one-off, paintings and collages which combine print with ink and paint.
Following four years at the Edinburgh College of Art, Susie moved to London and worked with many publishers on books and magazines for children which she illustrated. Titles for these books include traditional nursery rhymes, lullabies and fairy tales. An interest in Printmaking has evolved into Susie's chosen method of working, making relief prints from lino, both with separate blocks or by reduction. Susie works with linocut and collage in the studio in the gallery here in Crail, using the two Victorian bookbinding presses to make hand-made, limited edition, prints and pictures. She also makes Unique Collages using a combination of techniques and can be commissioned to make you a one-off piece, featuring, for instance, your home and garden. See the unique collages section to view some of Susie's previous commissions. View Susie's Work in the Gallery
Born in Glasgow, David graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1980 and practised in London for 11 years as an illustrator. He worked for a wide variety of magazines, design groups and advertising agencies. David returned to Scotland and has illustrated, written and developed ideas for children's books both in the UK and US over the years. His many titles have been published and sold worldwide by Pan Macmillan, Barefoot Books, Tango Books, Egmont, Piggy Toe Books, Chicken House/Scholastic and recently, Crocodile Creek. As a visiting lecturer and assessor at many art colleges, David has taught throughout the UK and in Dublin. Rachel graduated from the Edinburgh College of Art in 2006 with a BA(Hons) in Visual Communication, where she specialised in animation. As an exchange student, she enjoyed time at the Rhode Island School of Art and Design in the US. In 2011 she went on to graduate from the Royal College of Art in London with an MA in Communication Art and Design. Now living in Wakefield in Yorkshire, around the corner from the Hepworth Gallery, Rachel works from her own studio/print workshop in Westgate Studios. Rachel's work combines relief print with drawing and silkscreen, recent pieces being sculptural and 3D in nature. She teaches and runs regular workshops in printmaking, including courses at West Dean College near Chichester. For extra information about courses and to see more of Rachel's work, visit her website.
